I for one am well aware that our founding fathers were, for the most part, uncomfortable yet non-apologetic Deists. They knew the importance of separating church, any church, and the government because they had observed history and seen that when a church is in charge of a government, that government is doomed.

A lot of modern day Republicans don’t seem to be big fans of history, however, and Mike Huckabee is the top of that list. And now, he’s moving toward the top of the GOP contender list as well.

From the Telegraph.co.uk:

Mike Huckabee has stormed to frontrunner status in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, placing the former Baptist pastor in sight of one of the biggest upsets in US political history.

Wait, wait, there’s more; don’t forget the ‘aw shucks’:

By his own admission, when the former Arkansas governor began campaigning in Iowa he was flattered if someone took his picture with a mobile phone.

Awww, shucks. But, what about the numbers babble?

In California, he has jumped from four per cent to 17 per cent in two months leaving him just eight points behind Mr Giuliani without even setting foot in the most liberal state in the union, which is the biggest prize in all the primary elections to select nominees for the 2008 presidential contest.

If he can win Iowa, Mr Huckabee then faces a much stiffer task in the primaries that follow in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida, where his lack of money and organization on the ground may well count against him.

[…]

But he is no longer being written off as the promising outsider. “Huckabee is on a roll, he has gotten an enormous amount of publicity and he is doing very well with conservatives, who appear to have found a candidate,” said the pollster John Zogby.

Read the rest here. Funny enough, title aside, the whole article isn’t all the strong on numbers, just strong on the veiled warning of a pending, and every growing chance of a Huckabee administration.
