Why is breakfast cereal so expensive?

Seriously, why the hell is breakfast cereal so expensive? I spend more money on cereal than I do on meat.

    For the same reason that water is more expensive than soda. That is to say, because they can charge it and you will pay it.

    The same reason beer prices (that is to say good beer and not watered down crap the major breweries tell you is good) the price of corn, oats, and wheat are near a lifetime highs. It’s the ethanol thing making both morning and nighttime expensive…

    You’d think that such a highly subsidized food wouldn’t cost $4 a box. The sugar, wheat, corn and rice in there are among the top 5 subsidized crops in the country. Makes you wonder how much those Cheerios would cost without ’em.

    The cereal itself accounts for about 15% of the cost. The rest is packaging and marketing.
