Let me state – right up front – that I believe that Senator Bennett’s “health reform bill” is a giant turd.

Now, that said, here’s the defense.

1. At least he’s put something on paper, no matter how silly or bad.
2. He’s not being hysterical or wingnutty,
3. He’s not lying like Hatch, Chaffettz and Bishop*,

I’m far from the only one who knew that a UT-GOP mud bath was coming in the GOP race  for Bennett’s seat, so, while I’m not surprised, I just didn’t thing it would be this … blatant. It came to me after a few nano-seconds of contemplation – this sort of ad is perfect in its simplicity. Utah Republicans don’t READ! You can say whatever you want to them and, if it has a high level of bat-shit crazy and/or bullshit, there is a 99% probability that they will not bother to look up the facts. They’ll happily romp in the  verbal excrement of a kool-aid dispensing man-cub** like Chaffettz long before they’ll ever Google the Congressional Record or read a bill.

Look; a conservative group has got to be completely over the top and overwhelmingly full of shit before I’ll stand up for a Republican elected who has more than enough money to defend himself – but the problem is, these are the same lies being told by nearly every lying Republican across the country.

By trying to work with other members of the Senate, Bennett has become a target of the lunatic fringe of the GOP, and, when you compare it with the empty platitudes of Shurleff, he looks even more reasonable.

To sum up – Bennett’s proposal is horrible, for the most part, but, this attack ad is so blatantly bullshit that I felt compelled to say something. If you care about honesty and integrity in American politics, then you should care when this sort of thing happens, no matter what party the victim belongs to.

*Matheson, to his credit, isn’t lying, he’s just not doing anything at all, which may actually be worse, depending on how you look at it.

** I will keep saying rude things and calling names until Rep. Jason manifests the scrotal fortitude to come on my show and actually have a discussion with someone who doesn’t fawn on him. While Matheson and Bishop won’t come on either, their staff at least has the common courtesy to tell me no, as opposed to just hanging up on me in a frightened panic.
