Party over People:
Cannon Continues Lockstep March with Party Leadership
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Rep. Chris Cannon continues to support House Speaker Dennis Hastert, despite the fact that the majority opinion in his district is that Hastert should go. 42% of 3rd District residents polled in a recent Deseret Morning News/KSL-TV poll believe Cannon should call for Hastert to step down, while only 32% of the residents feel that Cannon should continue to support the speaker. Cannon has been a strong supporter of Hastert and has tried to place blame for the Foley scandal on the children and their parents to protect the GOP leadership.*
Statement from candidate Christian Burridge:
“This is just another sad example of Mr. Cannon being out of touch with the 3rd district. We need to put partisan politics aside and get to the bottom of what happened here. Anyone was aware of what was going on and did nothing to stop it, and testimony is showing a pattern of suppression and secrets, needs to step down. We need to elect a representative who will reflect our Utah values, and not return a man to D.C., who places the protection of party members and Washington insiders, regardless of sin and scandal, of higher import than protecting the reputation of Utah and its citizens.”

Chris Cannon interview quote from KSL “You know, these kids are
actually precocious kids. It looks like, just maybe, this one email
was just a prank, just a bunch of kids sitting around, egging this guy
on, you know. So, uh…the world’s a complicated place, and we just
have to do the best we can.” [KSL Nightside 10/05/2006]
