President Bush has asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings to determine how the federal government can help communities improve school safety.
Yet at the same time the Republicans in Congress are cutting Safe and Drug Free School Grants, which are the backbone of national efforts to provide every child with a safe and secure learning environment. This year, House Republicans would cut this funding by 34 percent compared to 2002.
Communities across America would lose funds that help prevent school violence, curb drug and alcohol use, and foster safe and healthy learning environments where children can achieve.
